What is GEAR UP?

Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) is a discretionary grant program designed to increase the number of low-income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education.

This is accomplished by providing activities aimed at increasing college attendance and completion by raising low-income students’ awareness of college and financial aid options, increasing their participation in academically challenging courses, and supporting them through the college admissions process.

GEAR UP provides six-year grants to states to provide services at high-poverty middle and high schools. GEAR UP grantees serve an entire cohort of students beginning no later than the seventh grade and follow the cohort through high school.

Marengo High School is proud to announce that we are a GEAR UP ALABAMA school this year. GUA focuses on the classes of 2020 and 2021. They will follow these students from 7th and 8th grade up until they become seniors. If these students meet the demands of the program, by the time they graduate high school, GUA will have funds to provide them with a free 2 year college education. GUA also will provide scholoarships for their parents to attend college as well. GUA has provided t-shirts, back packs, arm bands, academic resources, and college touring experience to our kids. We look foward to all the wonderful things this program will provide for our kids!
